      <image:title>Individual Therapy - Individual Somatic Therapy</image:title>
<image:caption>What issues is somatic therapy effective for? Somatic therapy is well suited to any of the issues for which one would normally seek therapy: anxiety, depression, grief, interpersonal problems, low self-esteem, life transitions, social anxiety, relationship stress, sexual issues, coping skills, spiritual crisis, and so on. These symptoms are usually signals that some habitual way of being is not supporting your present-day needs and wishes. By studying together in real time the emotions, sensations, thoughts, images, and memories connected to our current life challenges, we start to develop a map of your “default mode network”: What are the painful places I keep coming back to, and how do I keep winding up there? What emotions or experiences am I avoiding or repressing because they seem too frightening, shameful, or overwhelming, and how is my avoidance keeping me from living more fully? Which are the risks I need to take, and what will support me in taking them? When we are able to witness ourselves with interest and care, new insights and new possibilities have space to emerge. Why include the body in psychotherapy? In our increasingly busy and virtual world, most of us rarely find the opportunity to offer spacious attention to the bodies we live in. In somatic psychotherapy (soma is Greek for body), we deepen our work by paying close attention to the body in the here and now. The body is where our oldest and deepest memories are held, where are earliest codes are written. When we are able to slow down and sense inward, we immediately find that the body is never silent; through sensations, expressions, postures, gestures and fidgets it speaks in a language that carries deep personal meaning and history for each of us. By mindfully attuning to the body's language and listening to its long and profound memory, we are granted more focused access to the core wounds underlying present day challenges. What happens in a session? Like every kind of therapy, somatic therapy will include supportive dialogue exploring the themes in your life that feel painful or stuck. But rather than just talk, analyze, and strategize, somatic therapy includes abundant opportunities to slow down and give mindful attention to just how these issues occur in you in real time. Our therapists draw on leading somatic therapies such as Internal Family Systems (IFS), EMDR, and Hakomi Mindful Somatic Psychotherapy. No experience with mindfulness or meditation is required; your therapist will gently guide you toward mindful self-awareness and support you in bringing sustained, compassionate curiosity to your present experience. Toward the end of the session, your therapist will help you make meaning of what you experienced during the session, and think about how you can integrate the fruits of your explorations into your life. We look forward to getting to know you and helping you create the life you want.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Couples Therapy - Couples Therapy</image:title>
<image:caption>Our love relationships have the potential to be our most nourishing resources. But often, the patterns of sensitivity and self-protection we developed as children - our attachment styles - weigh upon our ability to offer and receive love as adults. At Brooklyn Somatic Therapy, our work with couples is guided by Emotion Focused Couples Therapy, an evidence based approach to healing relationships grounded in the neuroscience of attachment. In EFCT, neither partner is considered "the client"; rather, the relationship itself is the client. By listening to the two of you and observing your interactions in session, your therapist will help you discover the predictable cycles of reaction and counter-reaction that keep you feeling stuck or disconnected. Rather than be handed a script to follow at home, you'll be able to work on your relationship patterns as they occur in real time in the therapy session. You will learn to identify your emotional reactions in the moment and recognize the core needs underlying them, as well as how to communicate skillfully with your partner about your needs without getting angry or shutting down. EFCT tends to require between 8-20 sessions, though each couple's process is unique. Through the work, you will develop rich insight and compassion for the tender fears of abandonment and loss that each of you carries. Gaining freedom from unconscious fears and habitual cycles, you have the opportunity to transform a conflict-ridden relationship into one that activates the healing potential of love.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Trauma Therapy - Trauma Therapy</image:title>
<image:caption>Trauma is a fact of life. Fully 70% of adults in America have experienced a traumatic event at some point in their lives, whether it be a life-threatening incident or illness, physical or sexual assault, or a devastating loss. Sometimes, the fear and helplessness experienced during the event stay with us even after the danger has passed, interfering with our ability to live fully and confidently. The good news is that our tools for healing trauma are more powerful than ever. Modern research in trauma and PTSD has revealed much about the way trauma is stored in the brain and body, and how mindful attention and somatic awareness can bring about deep healing and personal growth. Our clinicians are well versed in cutting edge approaches to trauma resolution, including IFS and EMDR. Our approach to trauma treatment works to help you: -learn how to resource and soothe your nervous system in moments of stress -feel safer in your body and in the world -reconnect with your inner power and resilience -open up to nourishing connections and relationships -be released from negative beliefs formed in the wake of trauma -unlock the growth potential that comes with enduring a traumatic experience (click here to learn about post-traumatic growth) While exploration and resolution of trauma often occurs as part of a general somatic therapy experience, we are also available for brief, targeted courses of therapy focused on a particular traumatic event and its impact. You can let us know what you are looking for in the contact form.</image:caption>
